VISIT ROSEDALE - SOUTHERN BEEF WEEK
The Southern Beef Week will now be conducted at a new time, from July 30 - August 6. As with the organisers, we believe this is a much better time, away from busy Easter and those dry, unpredictable autumns. Look out for further notice as to what date and day we will be open, however, please remember, Rosedale welcomes visitors any time - just ring to make sure we are home.

18th ANNUAL SALE, 17th May, 2007
Our recent sale was a mixture of highs and lows. The high for the tremendous support from our incredible resilient beef producers and established clients who are weathering this drought and suffered the lows from the lack of demand and overall effects of the drought! Highlight included the purchase of Rosedale Archie(P) by David and Prue Bondfield of the Palgrove Stud in Qld., for the sale topping $16,000.00. A total outcross for their herd, low birth weight, polled with tremendous growth and thickness, David said this was the bull he was looking for. Lot 6, Rosedale Axle(P) by Wyoming Wind(P) sold to the Goodview and Jackson Charolais Stud at Guyra, for $13,000.00. The Downunder Charolais Stud, WA, purchased a polled Trapper son, Rosedale Ascot(P) for $8,000.00. Kadlunga Charolais Stud from SA purchased 3 sires, securing a polled Trapper son for $7,000.00. Commercial clients, Berrico purchased 5 bulls for an average of $5,800. Overall the charolais bulls averaged $4,600. The females were again in demand topping at $6,500.00, for an outstanding Trapper heifer sold to the Waterford Charolais Stud, Vic. Paringa Charolais Stud, Vic. purchased 14 heifers for an average $2400.00, including a polled Winston heifer for $6,000.00. The female draft averaged $2,560.00. This being our 18th On Property Sale, Rosedale celebrated by giving every purchaser a bottle of Rosedale's own labelled 2005 Tyrells Shiraz. (This 18th sale was of the 2005 year drop calves!) Our next milestone to look forward to will be our 21st!

2007 SYDNEY ROYAL SHOW
Rosedale Archie(P) by Rosedale Willie(P) came home with the Senior Champion Award at the recently held Sydney Royal. This is the first of Willie's progeny to be shown, and this result followed on from winning the very large 14-16mth class at the Melbourne Royal Charolais Feature Show in September, 2006. Archie(P) was admired by many for his free movement, great balance of muscle and growth, excellent EBV's and we believe he has tremendous potential to be a top sire. Rosedale's team of 8 head returned home with seven ribbons, from a showing of 126 charolais entries.

2006 /07 VIRBAC NATIONAL STEER COMPETITION
In the recently concluded Australian National Field Day Steer Trial, Rosedale's pen of Charolais x Shorthorn/Hereford steers were the Overall Winners of Class 1 (230-250kg carcase wt.), winning the Combined Liveweight Gain, (on grass and grain), Best Pen of Live Steers and Yield of Saleable Meat. Another pen of Rosedale's Charolais x Shorthorn steers entered in Class 2 (280-300kgs carcase wt.) won the Yield of Saleable Meat and was 2nd in the weight gain on grass. Rosedale's pen of steers in Class 1 was second overall, 1.5pts behind the winner from class 2, due to one carcase cutting dark, scoring no points for MSA eating quality. This is the 10th of such trials conducted by Australian National Field Days and Rosedale steers have always excelled , winning the Live weight gain section 9 times, and numerous other section.

VALE - Fernvale Trapper
Fernvale Trapper sadly passed away in January. He was fit in the paddock one day and dead the next - a snake bite perhaps. Trapper, born in 1998,was purchased by Rosedale for $35,000 at the 2000 Fernvale Production Sale. Trapper has had an enormous impact at Rosedale and we are lucky to have many productive daughters to continue his legacy in our herd for years to come. This impact is reinforced by the fact that Trapper is a trait leader for 200, 400, 600 and scrotal size and he is in the top 5% of the breed for carcase weight and top 10% of the breed for milk. In recent years his sons have been in tremendous demand from both stud and commercial buyers, topping last year's sale for $16,000. Rosedale will be offering 20 quality sons and 12 daughters at this year's sale on Thursday, May 17th, commencing at 11am.

SYDNEY SHOW
Rosedale is again busy preparing the team heading to the Sydney Royal in April and we are looking forward to catching up with friends, clients and visitors at our stand. Charolais judging day is Saturday April 14, commencing at 8.30am. Please note the change in the Show Programme - the Show starts on Good Friday, April 6 (show opened a week before Good Friday in the past) and continues through to Thursday April 19.

HAVE YOU SEEN THE BOOK?
Hot off the press and to be launched at the Sydney Royal is the outstanding book “Charolais in Australia” written by Joan Vickers. This book needed to be written and had been promised by several in the past, but nobody would ever have imagined the beautiful book that “our Joan” has completed for all of us to admire and appreciate. Through of her love and dedication of the Charolais breed she has recorded the history of the establishment and influence of Charolais in Australia and the people who made it happen over the last four decades. You will love it. Congratulations to Joan and to her publisher David Ell. To obtain your copy of this book contact David Ell - 02-9310 4433 info@davidell.com.au

HOBART ROYAL SHOW
Rosedale Zillee was recently awarded Interbreed Champion Bull at the Hobart Royal Show. Our congratulations go to Neville Fenton, Murton Charolais Stud, Tasmania, who purchased Zillee for $15,000, the second top priced bull at our Sale in May this year. Zillee, a Trapper son is a sound athletic and thick sire with very good balanced EBV's.

MELBOURNE ROYAL CHAROLAIS FEATURE SHOW
Rosedale Zinger(P) was awarded Reserve Senior Champion Bull at this show in September. A son of Deputy(P) Zinger is now out working and is our new Stud Sire. Another exciting young bull which you will see more of, Rosedale Archie(P), by Rosedale Willie(P), was awarded 1st place in the 12-15mth. class from a field of 13, the biggest class on the day. Rosedale Honor A1 by Trapper received 2nd place. All in all a great day out and we enjoyed supporting our southern Charolais friends.

2005/06 VIRBAC NATIONAL STEER COMPETITION
At this recently conducted trial the Rosedale Charolais/Shorthorn team of 4 excelled, winning the weight gain on grass with a gain of 0.97kgs. per day, (comp. av 0.8kgs per day). The steers were then fed for 100 days in a feedlot. The Rosedale team did not do so well in the “live” judging section with the Judge placing them well down in the 20 teams. However it was a different story after they had been processed as the team won the Pen of carcases, with 1 of them being the highest scoring carcase in the competition, using the new ABCAS evaluation system.

NEWS FROM WILCANIA
Happy clients, Col and Sue from Comarto Station passed on the progress of their sire, Rosedale Xcitabul, the top priced bull at our 2004 Annual sale. This photo was taken in April with some of his progeny. Sue reports that while they only had 30ml. of rain in the previous 8 months, Xcitabul managed to work well getting 27 calves from 28 cows, as well as holding his condition well. Also pleasing to hear that they sold 8 of his sons in May/June, all locally. Lets hope the rain comes there too, soon.

ROSEDALE'S 17th ANNUAL SALE RESULTS (Summary)

Our “thank you” goes to all successful purchasers and underbidders for their support and endorsement of the Rosedale genetics.

ROSEDALE CATTLE AT THE 2006 SYDNEY ROYAL SHOW

Home again after being at the Sydney Royal Show.  Rosedale Zapper came home with the Reserve Senior Champion ribbon and collectively we won 1 st, 6 2nds, 3 3rds and 1 4th.  Our Fernvale Trapper group won the Sires Progeny Group, our Pair of Bulls were 2nd and the Rosedale team was the 2nd Most Successful Exhibitor.

Sale Results
Rosedale's 17th Annual Sale - the best yet! While seasonal conditions, generally, could not be worse, the outstanding commercial achievements of our clients, together with the beef industry acceptance and demand for Charolais infussed cattle, was attributed for the strong result. 67 Charolais bulls (52 polled) topped at $16,000 to average $6209, with 15 sires purchased by Studs in Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.

Fernvale Trapper sires were in demand and in the top 9 lots for money and well and truly vindicated the value of his genetics when Rosedale paid a record price of $35,000 for him at the Fernvale Sale in 2000. Top priced Lot 5, Rosedale Zetah(P), a 19th month old polled Fernvale Trapper son, was purchased by Paris Charolais Stud, Gunnedah. Rosedale Zillee, lot 3, was secured by Murton Charolais Stud, Tasmania for $15,000. The Gobonga Charolais Stud, Queensland purchase Lot 23 for $12,500, Rosedale Zephlin(P) out of Champion cow Rosedale Empress S66(P) and lot 24 Rosedale Zeppelin, also out of Champion cow Rosedale Honor R67F sold to Averlais Charolais Stud, Parkes for $10,500. Lot 68, Rosedale Aquarius(P) at 13 months went to the Jackson Charolais Stud, Guyra for $9,000 and commercial buyers paid $11,000, three times for their Trapper bulls. Long time client and weaner producer Berrico Pastoral, Gloucester, purchased 8 bulls for a top of $8,000 to average $6750.00, and another successful weaner producer Mirrabooka Herefords, Walcha also purchased 8 bulls to a top of $6,000 twice.

The 19 Charolais/Shorthorn composite bull offering sold to $7,000 twice to average $3580, with repeat buyer Branga Plains, Walcha purchasing 6 bulls for an average of $4,166. 5 Charolais/Angus composite bulls topped at $4,500 and averaged $3400.

The females were again strong with a polled cow and calf unit topping at $7,500 to average $4400 for the 5 lots offered. Local breeder Dunmovin Charolais Stud purchased the top lot, 105, a quality Rosedale Selector(P) cow with an outstanding bull calf by Rosedale Willie(P) at foot and in calf again. The offering of the 26 unjoined heifers, including all the Spring “Z” drop with horns, was an opportunity that few wanted to miss and averaged $4058. Excellerator Genetics, Holbrook purchased an outstanding Trapper female who is in the top 15% of the breed for all traits for $6,000 and Paringa Charolais Stud in Victoria purchased 14 heifers for an average of $3714.

We would like to thank all successful purchasers and underbidders for their support and endorsement of the Rosedale genetics. This result was topped off by a beautiful Autumn day - typical, but unfortunately not experienced on previous sale days! Watching a lot of people peeling off their jumpers and complaining of being “too warm” at Rosedale was indeed welcomed, hence the beer was more popular than the soup this year. Again, the perennial optimists, we look forward to the much needed rain, everywhere, and hope next year's sale will be in a great season!

News from Thialand

All is going well in Thailand with our bull. They have been collecting semen from him and have sent photos of him in his new home – looking well and fine coated, after adapting to his new climate. He now answers to the name of “Sornarm”. If anyone reading this understands the Thai language, we would love to know what it means!

Rosedale’s Sale Result
June
Strong beef prices and confidence of Charolais in the beef industry outweighed the dry (drought, again!) and uncertain weather conditions for a good sale result for Rosedale at their 16th Annual Sale. 97 registered buyers from NSW, Victoria, Queensland and South Australia created strong bidding and buying for a sale gross of $435,250 for 111 head, bulls topping at $10,500 and averaging $4806.

The top priced bull, Rosedale Young Gun(P), went to Harold Sealey of Ashwood Park Charolais, Vic., by Minnie Vale Deputy(P) out of Rosedale Lucy(P), an outstanding dam by Rosedale Navigator(P). Rosedale Yfront(P) sold to the Price family of Moongool Charolais, Q. for $9,500, a polled Fernvale Trapper son. 8 yearling bulls were offered for the first time in this year’s draught and they topped at $5,000 and averaged $3875. The top priced yearling, Rosedale Zanza(P), another polled son of Fernvale Trapper was purchased by George and Jo Vickery, Canoona Charolais Stud, Guyra. A total of 14 bulls went into Studs and the herd bulls went to areas where the rain had been more prevalent, to both new and long time repeat buyers. Volume repeat buyers Berrico Pastoral Company, Gloucester purchased 4 Charolais bulls to $7,500 to average of $5,500 and Branga Plains Pastoral Company, Walcha purchased 6 FI bulls to $4,500 to average $3750.

Females were again strong with the top price of $9,000 paid twice. An outstanding Seawell Offshore heifer went to Ian Curley and Maree Morgan’s Argentun Stud, Q. and a tremendous Rosedale Navigator(P) matron, Rosedale Jacqie S72(P), with a very good heifer calf at foot by Minnie Vale Deputy(P) and in calf again, sold to the Duke family’s Sunreap Stud, Q. The joined females averaged $3304 while the unjoined “Y” heifers averaged $2400.

Mark your calendar for next years’sale – 18th May, 2006.

NEW HERD SIRE

GUNNADOO YUPPIE(P) joins the sire battery at Rosedale, purchased from Gunnadoo for $12,000.00 at their recent Annual sale. Yuppie(P) was the highest ranked in domestic and export $indexes, ranks in the top 1% for milk and 600 day growth and top 5% for 200 and 400 day growth. He is by Palgrove Standout(P), a polled son of WCR FA Mac 2244.

ROSEDALE GENETICS IN THAILAND
Rosedale Zero, by Rosedale Wrangler(P), was selected by the Thai Government Army to be part of a major beef improvement programme to improve their native herd, a small Bos Indicus type cattle.

In the past they have imported semen but decided to import the live animals, to educate and show the village farmers the physical proof of increased beef production, achievable by crossbreeding. Another bull,
BSF XFactor was selected, and the pair now live in air conditioned facilities undergoing a semen collection programme and will be taken to Field Days and shows throughout the beef producing areas of Thailand.

SHORTHORN FEEDER TRIAL
held at Killara Feedlot. A pen of 6 Charolais/Shorthorn steers breed and entered by Rosedale came 2nd in the live weight gain section of the trial. Sired by V44, a Mr. Perfect(P) son, the steers averaged 1.75 kgs. per day, with a trial average of 1.52kgs over 117 days from the 20 teams entered.

2004 VIRBAC NATIONAL GRASS FED STEER COMPETITION
June
Rosedale’s Charolais/Shorthorn breed steers won the live weight gain, again, at the recently concluded grass fed steer trial held by the Australian National Field Days in Orange. This is the 8th of such competitions they have organised, under various seasonal conditions, and this is the 7th time Rosedale steers have won this section. Rosedale’s entries averaged 0.78 kg. per day with the Trial average being 0.68kgs. per day. This team was 3rd for Yield of Saleable Meat and was 2nd in the overall competition. The 2004 competition comprised 15 teams, ran over 289 days as one mob and were fed hay and silage as required, grazed in a paddock rotation and targeted the Supermarket Trade, 230-250kg. carcase weight.

This Trial is one of the few grass fed trial in existence and continues to provide an area of benefit to cattle producers whereby they can evaluate their cattle’s performance off grass, both hoof and hook, and by producing cattle to meet target markets. Unfortunately, due to this year’s seasonal conditions (tired of using that ‘d’ word) and in a ‘real life’ situation, these cattle would have been finished in a feedlot rather than slaughtered.

SYDNEY ROYAL
The Rosedale team of 10 head is heading to Sydney.  I'm sure you are aware of the change in programme with  the beef cattle in the second of the show. Charolais judging is Tuesday 29th March, commencing 8.30am.

Market Share
March
We read with interest in an article in The Land (4.3.04, submitted by the Angus Society) reflecting  Angus sires sold in 2003, and would like to share it with you.

''In 2003, 47% of the British and European breed bulls sold at auction throughout Australia were Angus, up from 44% in 2002.  Another big mover was
Charolais comprising 11% of bulls sold, up from 9% last year and passing the Poll Herefords for the first time to become the third top-selling British or European breed behind Angus and Herefords.

HEALTHY RED MEAT - keep eating it!
Our congratulations to MLA (Meat & Livestock Australia Ltd) for funding CSIRO's own scientific research on the benefits of eating red meat.  The Wellbeing diet promoted at the moment endorses that 3-4 lean red meat meals per week be part of a healthy diet. This protein-enriched, low fat diet is a clinically proven way to help overweight women shed kilos. (See MLA's consumer web site - www.themainmeal.com.au)

MLA reports results of tracking attitudes of General Practitioners and Dietitions in favour of red meat, over the past year are:-
  • the number of GP's recommending red meat 3-4 times a week has increased by 18% to 63%
  • 43% of doctors are now recommending red meat 3-4 times a week as part of a weight control diet - up from 33
  • 49% of doctors recommend red meat 3-4 times a week to patients with high cholesterol - up from 33%.

Put this with a study on beef consumption over the last 12 months and see that beef consumption increased by 4.6%.

So you are on a good thing and my advice is to stick with it. Eat more beef, and be pleased to know that the levy you pay is good for you too.

14th ANNUAL SALE

2003 Rosedale Annual Sale
May
"A Pleasing result under the circumstances" sums up Rosedale's 14th Annual Sale. Coping with the worst drought ever, Michael and Jenny were delighted and encouraged by the support of both seedstock and commercial bull buyers. Top price on the day was $8,250 for Rosedale Wizard, a of Seawell Offshore son, purchased by Tony Robins, Wandoan Qld. Rosedale Wrangler(P) a polled son of Offshore sold for $6,500 to Graham and Greg Parkhurst of the Karina Charolais Stud, Ben Lomond and $6,000 secured Rosedale Wallaby, an outstanding Rosedale Selector(P) son for the Munns family Carmena Charolais Stud Grafton. In total 7 Charolais sires went to stud herds. Those commercial breeders lucky enough to hang onto their female herd bought with confidence. Berrico Pastoral Co., Gloucester took 9 bulls home for an average $3,333, B & M Newbigging of Tomingley took 5 bulls for an average of $3,800 and Graham Clark of Baan baa finished up with 4 bulls to average $2,000.

Demand for F1 bulls was down on last years sale, with volume buyers Comaro Station purchasing 6 Charolais/Shorthorn bulls for a total of $13,250.

Overall 43 Charolais bulls averaged $3,453 and 9 F1 bulls averaged $2,389. No females were offered due to the drought.

Michael and Jenny are looking forward to a
BIG general rain and females featuring at their 15th Annual Sale to be held on 21st of May 2004.

HISTORY.....in the making
May

Australian genetics are bound for the UK. A first in the history of the charolais breed genetics are going back to where it all began, after importing the first UK semen 34 years ago!

Rosedale Willie(P), an outstanding son of Rosedale Navigator has been selected by UK breeders to use in their herd, and market in the UK and Europe, primarily to introduce Polled genetics into northern hemisphere herds. Rosedale Willie(P) will be a total outcross to these herds as both sire and dam are a strong combination of Australian and American genetics, being four generations away from British or French bloodlines. This is quite a feat, and as Rosedale is one of the oldest pioneering Studs in Australia, it is also very satisfying.

Sydney Royal
April
At this years Sydney Royal Rosedale took home 2 Reserve Champion awards. Rosedale Honour W39 claimed the Reserve Junior Champion Female sash, while Rosedale Honour R67 took the Reserve Senior Champion Ribbon.

DROUGHT - and it’s consequence.
March
This drought has impacted on all our lives in many ways and here at Rosedale it has been without doubt, the mother of them all. However, we are looking forward to “normal” seasons everywhere and in the meantime we are doing the best we can.

Unfortunately because of the drought, for this year only, we are unable to offer any females for sale. We weaned all our calves down to 10 weeks and they have been on grain or pellets ever since. And understanding that we are not the only ones in this ‘drought’ we doubted the demand for females, (who wants another mouths to feed?).

About the bulls -
Lots 1-10 have been feed at Rosedale and include our show bulls. Lots 11-65 are at Dick and John Stone’s Oakleigh Feedlot at Canowindra, and have been there since February, 6. These bulls are not being fed a full feedlot fattening ration, rather the maximum amount of grain in their mix, by weight, is 55%. 75 bulls went into the feedlot so if some perform better than others, we may have the odd substitution.
On a very positive note, we are delighted to offer for the first time sires by Fernvale Trapper and Seawell Offshore. Within the draft there are 12 sons of Trapper and 8 sons of Offshore as well as the last 3 sons of 2UP The Vegemite Kid to entice you. This is an excellent draft of the 2001 drop bulls with great Breedplan figures and strong pedigrees, many of which I consider to be prospective Stud Sires.

Grand Champion Female Canberra Royal 2003
Rosedale Gerty V97 was awarded Grand Champion Female at the 2003 Canberra Royal Show. A young mum with her first calf took the judges eye to win Senior Champion and went onto become the Grand Champion Charolais Female. Gerty was purchased as a calf at foot at the 2001 Rosedale sale, and was awarded Reserve Junior Champion Female at the 2002 Sydney Royal Show. Congratulations Matt Bright of Bryson Charolais Stud.

Grand Champion Female Melbourne Royal 2002
Glenfield Thing a me jig, by Rosedale Regal (P), was awarded Grand Champion Female at the 2002 Melbourne Royal Show. Thing a me jig was in utro when Helen purchased Rosedale Nellie, a joined heifer, at our Annual Sale in 1998. Well done Helen Watson and Brian Barnes of Glenfield Charolais Stud.

National Sale
October

Rosedale Candy W29 (P) went to the Charolais National in Tamworth where she was placed first in her class and reserve junior champion heifer. She was sold to Jo and George Vickery of Canoona Charolais for $6,000.

We also purchased top priced bull
Minnie Vale Deputy (P) for $35,000. Stay tuned for pictures and further updates on our latest walking sire.

14th Annual On Property Sale - Thursday 15th May, 2003
